MARLIN (October 27, 2009)-A disturbance Sunday among gang members left four inmates with minor injuries at the Marlin Transfer Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Correctional Institutions Division.

Michelle Lyons, public information officer for TDCJ-CID in Huntsville told News 10 on Tuesday some 25 inmates, all of whom are thought to be members of prison gangs, squared off in the unit recreation yard at about 1:45 p.m. and began to fight.

The altercation involved inmates of two races - black and Hispanic.Security officers at the unit were able to separate the fighting inmates without using tear gas or other chemical agents.

The four inmates who were hurt sustained what officials described as minor injuries.Agency policy dictates the four injured inmates will be moved to another facility for their own safety.

The Marlin Transfer Facility houses 258 male inmates and has a security staff of 89.

The event did not require additional staff and was handled by those employees who were on duty at the time. The transfer facility is one of two TDCJ-CID units in Marlin, the other being the Hobby Unit, which houses as many as 1,342 female inmates and has a security staff of 250...
